What is Ashwagandha?

Ashwagandha is a medicinal plant that has been used for over 3000 years in the field of traditional Indian Ayurvedic medicine to relieve stress, increase energy levels to improve concentration, and many other purposes (6).

Ashwagandha is a so-called adaptogen, best known for its abilities to help the body better cope with stress and reduce the dangerous effects of chronic stress on health and well-being.

Scientific studies have now been able to confirm the effects of Ashwagandha and also prove many benefits for athletes, bodybuilders and health-conscious people, ranging from a faster build-up of strength and muscle mass to better regeneration and faster fat loss.

Much of the health benefits of ashwagandha in this regard are attributed to a group of plant compounds known as withanolides.

What are the benefits of Ashwagandha for muscle building and fat loss?

Although ashwagandha is primarily known for its stress-relieving effects, this medicinal plant also possesses a number of properties that can accelerate and promote muscle building. Numerous studies have concluded that subjects taking ashwagandha were able to build up to 1.7 times more strength and up to 2.3 times more muscle mass than those not taking ashwagandha (23, 24, 25).

In addition to this, significantly less exercise-induced muscle damage was observed in the subjects, which together with the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of Ashwagandha will result in significantly faster and better recovery after exercise.

Part of ashwagandha's muscle-building effects may be due to the fact that, at least in men, this compound can increase levels of endogenous muscle-building hormones by up to 40% (26, 27, 28, 29).
