Notes

Pregnant and lactating women should not take ashwagandha because there is evidence that ashwagandha may increase the risk of miscarriage, and there is no firm evidence of safety and harmlessness during lactation.

People taking diabetes medications, blood pressure medications, or thyroid medications should discuss any use of ashwagandha with their treating physician, as ashwagandha can potentially lower blood sugar levels and blood pressure, as well as increase thyroid hormone production, which could lead to adverse interactions with said medications.

What is Ashwagandha?

Ashwagandha is a medicinal plant that has been used for over 3000 years in the field of traditional Indian Ayurvedic medicine to relieve stress, increase energy levels to improve concentration, and many other purposes (6).

Ashwagandha is a so-called adaptogen, best known for its abilities to help the body better cope with stress and reduce the dangerous effects of chronic stress on health and well-being.

Scientific studies have now been able to confirm the effects of Ashwagandha and also prove many benefits for athletes, bodybuilders and health-conscious people, ranging from a faster build-up of strength and muscle mass to better regeneration and faster fat loss.

Much of the health benefits of ashwagandha in this regard are attributed to a group of plant compounds known as withanolides.

To guarantee you a consistent and maximum effect, our Ashwagandha is standardized to a very high withanolide content of 10%. The standardization ensures that every batch has the same high withanolide content and you always get the same effect!

What are the benefits of Ashwagandha for muscle building and fat loss?

Although ashwagandha is primarily known for its stress-relieving effects, this medicinal plant also possesses a number of properties that can accelerate and promote muscle building. Numerous studies have concluded that subjects taking ashwagandha were able to build up to 1.7 times more strength and up to 2.3 times more muscle mass than those not taking ashwagandha (23, 24, 25).

In addition to this, significantly less exercise-induced muscle damage was observed in the subjects, which together with the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of Ashwagandha will result in significantly faster and better recovery after exercise.

Part of ashwagandha's muscle-building effects may be due to the fact that, at least in men, this compound can increase levels of endogenous muscle-building hormones by up to 40% (26, 27, 28, 29).

In addition, ashwagandha's ability to significantly lower elevated catabolic cortisol levels (2, 20, 26) is also likely to contribute to a more anabolic environment in the body after exercise, which will have a positive effect on recovery and muscle development.

However, ashwagandha can not only promote muscle building, but also accelerate fat loss (24, 30). Several factors seem to be involved in this. First, of course, the stress-relieving effects of ashwagandha may help reduce stress-induced bouts of cravings, but beyond that, ashwagandha also appears to have tangible physiological effects on fat loss. For example, there is evidence that ashwagandha may increase natural levels of the thyroid hormones T3 and T4, which are critical for metabolic regulation and fat loss (31).

What other health benefits does ashwagandha have?

In addition to its benefits for bodybuilders, athletes, and figure-conscious people, ashwagandha has a variety of other health benefits.

  • Improved ability to cope with stress: Although ashwagandha cannot reduce stress itself, it can help you cope better with stress by, among other things, appearing to block certain pathways for transmitting stress signals in the brain (19). As a result, ashwagandha can reduce symptoms of stress and anxiety (20, 21, 22) and alleviate stress-related sleep disturbances (20).
  • Reduction of blood sugar levels and improvement of insulin sensitivity: Numerous human studies have shown that ashwagandha can reduce blood sugar levels in diabetics and healthy people (2, 3, 4, 5). This is based, among other things, on an increase in insulin secretion and an improvement in insulin sensitivity (1).
  • Improving immune system function: ashwagandha can increase the activity of the immune system's natural killer cells, thereby reducing susceptibility to infectious diseases (7, 8),
  • Lowering cholesterol and triglyceride levels: In human and animal studies, ashwagandha has been shown to lower both blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels by double digits, potentially reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease (2, 3, 4, 5, 9).
  • Improve cognitive function and memory: in addition to its ability to improve reduced memory and brain function as a result of injury and disease (10, 11, 12, 13), ashwagandha can also improve general memory, attention, and the ability to perform complex tasks, and reduce reaction time in healthy individuals (14, 15).
  • Possesses pronounced antioxidant activity: Ashwagandha has the ability to increase antioxidant levels in the blood and thus can protect the body from free radicals, which can damage cells and genetic material of the body, and are partly responsible for the development of many chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and Alzheimer's disease.
  • Possesses pronounced anti-inflammatory effects: Ashwagandha can reduce chronic inflammation in the body, which is considered a trigger of cardiovascular disease and many other chronic diseases in the Western world (2, 16, 17, 18).
